Game Development Insights: The Discovery Phase

  • The discovery stage in game development establishes a strong foundation for a successful project
  • By target audience, market research, and game design document.
  • The Discovery phase is the careful shaping of a game idea that clarifies what must be and what outcomes are needed to have a clear viewpoint on how to get there as part of development.
  • The discovery phase involves thinking up the game idea and doing market research.
  • The discovery phase also has an obligatory requirement of effective communication and collaboration among the team members, since this can somehow act as a foundation for building any solution.
  • Outsourcing companies need to do a discovery phase, it’s the heart of being able to communicate clearly and understand what the client needs

Introduction

Game development pre-production, also known as the discovery phase (or Blueprint Stage) is the stage of your game creation that if done correctly will set you up for success from day one. From targeting audience and market research to developing a game design document. Although this phase may not be relevant for solo developers or companies that work on an outsourced basis, the identification of a discrete system came as super important to reflect our creator.

Developing games is great fun but also a complex task requiring first and foremost careful planning. The discovery phase, the first step in the development process, is key to defining your game idea and a foundation for other phases of development. This includes scoping the project, market research, game design documents, and a lot more.

It does not matter if you are a solo indie developer or an outsourcing company; creating detailed pre-production documentation is critical to having your game project run smoothly. Even expert developers should go through it, so your projects can be well planned as well organized!

Learn about the Discovery Phase in Game Development

Discovery is a key part of game development where we get to know the design, target audience, and what needs to be done. These are normally the first in line of development where all initial game ideas have been created and lay down a solid foundation for further projects. In the discovery phase, all teams with customers collaborate to determine requirements and details.

Well, for starters, we need to know what everyone wants and expects from being there. This involves talking to stakeholders and achieving what they want from the project. At Whimsy Games, we have divided it into 3 options, where everyone can find the best option for themselves, depending on their wishes, opportunities, and goals:

Package 1

  • Concept Document –  is a brief, high-level overview of the game idea, outlining the core concept, core features, target audience, and overall vision, as a first step before creating a more detailed Game Design Document (GDD).
  • Mind Map – a visual diagram that organizes information around a central concept, using branches to represent related ideas and subtopics, making it easier to brainstorm, plan, and understand complex subjects.
  • Reference board – a collection of images, colors, and materials gathered to inspire and guide the visual style and direction of a project, helping to ensure that everyone involved shares a common vision.
  • Estimation  based on the materials above, we draw conclusions taking into account all the nuances.

Package 2

  • Game Design Document contains a thorough description of the concept, gameplay mechanics, and story plot you are going to stick with through the whole game corresponding characters and levels as well as monetization steps that represent themselves like a draft plan for the developers. This way all participants know and follow the same vision during its development.
  • Mind Map – everything like in Package 1.
  • MoodBoard – a set of images, colors, textures, and design elements that visually represent the overall style, atmosphere, and feel of a game, helping to convey the intended mood and art direction to the development team.
  • Concept Art – contains thumbnails that depict characters, UI screens, and other key elements of the game. Providing a visual framework and reference point for game design and helping guide the artistic development process.
  • Estimation -Taking into account all previous data, we form a general vision of the product.

Package 3

  • Game Design Document – everything like in Package 1.
  • Mind Map – everything like in Package 1 or 2 if you want.
  • MoodBoard – everything like in Package 1.
  • Concept Art – everything like in Package 1.
  • Unity prototype Our Unity developers will create a basic playable prototype that demonstrates your game’s core mechanics. This prototype can be used for internal testing, refining mechanics, and securing funding.
  • Estimation – just based on the materials above.

During the discovery phase (or Blueprint Stage), you help to identify what it is about the game that makes people play and find shared understanding in terms of core objectives/outcomes. This includes establishing realistic goals for the project, defining what would be a good experience to have with users, and setting out specifically what technical requirements will be needed in order to deliver that. Such goals will allow the development team to keep the project focused and satisfy the expectations of its client.

Why is so Importance Discovery Phase for Outsourcing Companies?

In this industry of game development outsourcing, the discovery phase plays an important role. When you have clients from different parts of the world, efficient communication is needed to fully comprehend what the client needs and expects.

The discovery phase is an essential part of most outsourcing services as companies use this time to get to know the work and the vision behind what they are working on. It helps in having the development process according to the client’s goals and at the same time it makes sure that whatever they have made in their local environments is what you are expecting them for.

While dwelling into the discovery phase, Outsourcing companies can maintain effective communication with clients for regular updates and feedback to do a collaborative effort of working. This in turn leads to a good working relationship and ensures hassle-free passage of projects.

With this prerogative in mind, outsourcing companies can invest more time and effort in the discovery phase to minimize risks and challenges that may be encountered during the development process. The few meetings that people do need are to identify those missing or incomplete, and then for them all to change the contract with each other on a project.

In the end, this step is vital for offshore game development companies since it would ensure smooth communication and meeting client requirements in a project of developing web games.

Discovery Phase Goals and Results

The game discovery phase identifies and anchors a variety of desired outputs that help determine if you have started at something likely to be a successful project. These objectives include:

  • Defining the game design: It can set up the whole vision of your game for you, from mechanics through art and all other important elements of design. It helps in keeping the entire team on the same page and working towards a common goal.
  • Good User Experience: The phase of discovery is to understand the target audience and know what they like. It is good at creating a game that makes the players interested in playing because it is fun and challenging.
  • Efficient project management: There are different team members from whom the idea is derived and, on a discovery phase basis, a little head-up with all of them by the Project Manager helps in getting continuous checks if we are not misleading. That has to do with setting realistic goals, mapping out a project timeline, and efficient allocation of resources.
  • Discovering Technical Needs: This phase is a great way to discover technical requirements for your game such as which platforms it should run on, required programming languages or frameworks, and if you already know the need to have a game engine that will help you get started right away. This way developers can develop and finalize their product using the most efficient procedures in terms of development shops.

All of this allows the discovery phase to fulfill its mission: providing clear answers and guarantees on everything related to game development, so that all stakeholders -including both those from within your organization as well as outsiders- have a common point of view.

Game Development Insights: The Discovery Phase

First Part of the Discovery Phase

To get going with game development, the first few steps form an important ground of discovery. These steps include:

  • Brainstorm/Conceptualizing a game idea: This, of course, is when you sit down and try to come up with something that has never been done before. All the way from writing game mechanics, designing art, or even who are your target audience.
  • The first part is pre-launch activities such as Market Research and Analysis: You should look at what the market trends are, your potential target audience, and competition. It can be used to determine what the market needs and then create a UVP for your game.

Taking these steps, in the beginning, will ensure you have a strong overview to align your project with market trends and player desires(USER ACCEPTANCE STUDIES)

Abstracting Your Game Concept

Game DesignDiscovering Phase: Conceptualizing the Game Idea You have to brainstorm and develop a one-of-a-kind innovative game concept. Here is an overview of some specifics

  • Define the gameplay mechanics: Identify which gameplay elements will become essential for it to be fun and interesting. How will the player progress through this passage, and what does it encourage them to do or force them into doing?
  • Develop Visuals: Produce concept art that visualizes your game idea. This aids in making rules about the art of characters, environments and so on to be clear within this game.
  • Think about the audience: Determine who you want your game’s target market to be, and customize your concepts around that group. Think about what games they like, themes and genres of literature that play into their interests, and how the game will cater to them.
  • Fine-tune the game idea: Iteratively improve and fine-tune your game concept as you get feedback from playtesting. This makes the vision for the game a lot more attractive and transparent.

Better conceptualization lays a strong foundation for development, which can help you to make your game unique in such a competitive market.

Market Research and Analysis

Market Research and AnalysisThis is your crucial discovery phase of game development. It can help you learn the current state of the market, player tastes, and possible competition. The reflection of these elements follows: Pros to Take Into Account

  • Understand who you are targeting: This means identifying the target market and what their demographics, preferences, and behaviors look like. Know what games they like and appropriate concepts or gameplay elements that appeal to them
  • Study the competition: Look at what is out there in other genres to learn from the mistakes of other games that do really well, and analyze their strengths. This also helps you in forming a Unique value proposition for your game which can separate it from the competition.
  • Take the player’s experience into consideration: Find out what makes games fun and interesting for players. Think about the aesthetics of gameplay mechanics, level design, and art style.
  • Mobile Game Market Research: If your game belongs to the mobile games category, then understand how it is trending, and what are some of the expectations in this particular space. Take into account what you can and cannot do on a mobile platform and use that to help make your game stand out.

Thorough market research and analysis is the only way to get valuable insights on target audiences and trends in markets. This gets a core of the players and stands your game in the sea, helping create resonance among the player base against their saturated library.
